I will begin the introductions. I am the instructor for this course at LSUAlexandria and am also an ASCP Consultant with the PEPFAR Initative. I traveled to Nairobi and then on to Kakamega in May of this year to participate in the first roll-out and training for Kenya. I met and worked with Bedan Kangethe during the two weeks of training. I have been a Med Tech for 25+ years and love the profession! My favorite department is Chemistry. I look forward to this project and to meeting each of you.
My husband and I have two very spoiled black and white cocker spaniel dogs.

I am currently employed as a Phlebotomist and I do like my job very much. Expanding my education and knowledge to become a Med Tech will definitely work in my favor since I already love the laboratory setting. I have not decided on which lab department I would like to specialize in, but that will come. I hope this blog will serve us all well. I can't wait to hear your ideas and learn of your country and culture!

Hello.Iam Sigey,taking medical lab science at Kenyatta University.I enjoy the prog., as a talent and hobby.I am single.I hail from Rift Valley province where there are lots of wildlife:Baboons,zebras and Lions,just to name afew.I am a sporty person on weekends and love to watch wild animals.I have a dream of doing my masters in the states(USA).Hope to meet you guys soon.
Sylvia:
Rift Valley province sounds like a great place to visit because of all the wildlife.In Lousisiana we have deer,ducks,hogs and turkeys to name a few. Alot of people in this area love to hunt including my boyfriend but I like to just watch the wildlife instead of hunting them.
Hey this is Jessica. Kenya sounds wonderful. I would love to see the wildlife there. I love animals especially cats, so I would love the lions. Louisiana has some interesting wildlife as well, we have the alligator which is similiar to the crocodile. Also, Iam interested in Forensic Science and would love to here more about your Forensic lab. Hope you have a good week.
Eric:
Hi. My name is Eric and I am in the Med Tech program at LSU - Alexandria. I have enjoyed the classes, and hope to complete the four year degree. So far, microbiology and clinical chemistry are my favorites. I am looking forward to learning more about you all and your program.
Happy to hear from you again and to learn that you also have some wildlife there.Here,one can never exhaust the wildlife,there are some centers established,where wildlife lovers can watch the animals at close range and even get to feed them(for example the girrafe center situated within the Nairobi city).A tour outside Nairobi can lead you to view bird santuaries in some of our lakes- with over 500 bird species;including flamingoes.
How is the situation there with politics now that your general elections are near?By the way when are they being held?
Sylvia:
The president election is November 4, 2008 here. I have just started to research and study the different candidates. At this time I do not know who I will vote for and have no comment to give.
jessica:
HI! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year! I am looking forward to the New Year, graduating from school and starting a new career. What are you looking forward to in the new year?
Sal;
Happy new year to all.Hope you are all optimistic about what the year has to offer:I am looking forwad to graduating from college and getting a nice job.Wish every one a good start.
I am anxious to hear from you and to know you are safe. Are you able to run CBCs and have you begun your analysis to compute reference ranges yet?
Sal;
To be honest,there is so much tension in Kenya.We students come from different towns and many are still being held up in their home areas since the chrismas holiday due to insecurity on major highways.We have not been able to report to work or college hence we cannot access all the materials we need for the project.
However, we are still gathering information and I hope we will proceed with the project once things stabilize.
I am very happy to hear from you and thank you for keeping us updated.
I recently returned from Durban, South Africa and did read a few articles in their newspapers about Kenya. We will be ready to continue this project when you are all back at school and the lab.
It seems the UN will be trying to help bring peace and compromise to your country. It is very sad for me because Kenya is a beautiful country and Kenyans are even more beautiful and caring.
Take care,
Cathy
Jessica,
I just wanted to say Hi. I am glade to hear that everyone there is safe. I hope you continue to stay safe.
Sylvia:
Hello! Just want to let everybody know that I posted a case study. Is everyone able to report to college in Kenya yet? It would be great if we could proceed with the project.
Hi everyone.I want to apologise to LSUA students on behalf of KU stents for the delay in posting our findings.We reported to college like two weeks ago.Gladly non of us was hurt during the skirmishes.Thank you for your concern about our safety.It was a great encouragement.At the moment we are consolidating our ideas and we will posting some information soon.
I also thank you for your patience.
Cathy:
I am encourged that you are all able to return to school and to the lab. We definitely want to continue this project with all of you.
To let you know- I was invited and presented this project at our national clinical laboratory educators conference last month- there were many people who attended and were so interested in both our project and in PEPFAR and about Kenya and you as a group of med tech students ! Then, Sylvia (LSUA student) and I were invited to present the project at another conference in Nashville, Tennessee 2 weeks ago. Again manyn people atended our session and even more came up to us after our presentation to ask questions about the project!! I am very proud to be working on such an important project and to be working with each of you, both LSUA and NPHL students.
Sylvia:
Hello,I hope everything is getting back to normal and you are able to return back to school/work. Have you been able to start working on the reference ranges yet? I along with Laura are doing a poster on our project and need any information you can give us on what was been done from your end.We greatly appreciate all that has been done and hope to hear from you soon.
I was just wondering when do you graduate or finish your studies? I know that I am looking forward to my completion of clinicals in July.
Laura
